Welcome
Another chapter is created in the annals of
International Gas Union’s (IGU) history with the awarding of Presidency of IGU to
Malaysia. For only the second time, an Asian country has been given the mantle
of IGU’s leadership and with it, the privilege to host the premier global event
within the gas industry. The 25th World Gas Conference, to be held
in Kuala Lumpur, will be the culmination of the various studies and programmes
undertaken during the course of the 2009 - 2012 Triennium, for the betterment
and development of gas industry worldwide.
The shift of the Presidency of IGU from the
South American region also mirrors the global nature of the gas industry. Asia
is home to more than half the world’s human population as well as some of the
major producers and consumers of natural gas. And with the fact that it houses
areas of potentially very high economic growth, Asia is and will be the focus
of interest for the whole world.
At the same time, natural gas will continue
to play a vital role in meeting the world’s expanding energy needs while
helping to cut greenhouse gas emissions, a persistent threat to global growth,
life and environmental sustainability. Despite intense interests to accelerate
the development of ‘green energy’ for the creation of low carbon economy,
natural gas is expected to continue its dominance as the fuel of choice in the
coming decades.
Against this backdrop, the Malaysian
Presidency has set the theme “Gas:
Sustaining Future Global Growth” as the foundation for the work during the
2009-2012 Triennium. The theme
inherently portrays gas as the engine for global growth which has to be
sustained in its availability through innovation, technology and competent
human capital. With the continuous support of IGU and its fraternity, we are
committed to continuing the standards of excellence as set by past presidency
and steer IGU towards greater height with the successful organisation of the 25th
World Gas Conference.
Malaysia is honoured to be given the privilege
to host such a prestigious event and we look forward to welcoming you all to
visit this beautiful country and meet its warm people. Kuala Lumpur will serve
as the perfect host city with its excellent blend of cultural heritage and
modern facilities. As the venue for the event WGC2012 Concept Village will be a model of integrated efficiency
where all participants and visitors alike will be assured of pleasant and
seamless event experience.
On behalf of the Malaysian National
Organising Committee and International Gas Union, it gives me great pleasure to
invite all of you to participate at the 25th World Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur on 4 – 8 June 2012.

Datuk (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim
President International Gas Union
